To counter the threat of the ISIS terrorist organization, both Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) have advocated American arms, training and the equipment of war be provided to who they describe as the moderate factions involved in the Syrian Civil War, as reported by the Independent Journal Review on Sept. 13, 2014 and also by the Huffington Post on Sept. 12, 2014. However, the breaking news in the Middle East is that the alleged pro-Western alliance known as The Free Syrian Army has entered into a non-aggression pact with ISIS, at least until Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is overthrown.

Despite both of the former contenders for the presidency have now joined to arm who they’ve deemed the “vetted” moderates, the same vetted moderates have agreed to an agreement brokered by the al-Qaeda allied al-Nusra Front not to take up arms against ISIS until if and when their main foe in Damascus has been toppled. Reportedly, of the myriad of armed factions fighting the Assad regime, and more often than not each other, many of the US government deigned “moderates” and ISIS have agreed to a cease fire “so that they can focus on taking down the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad.”

Among the signatories include the major U.S. ally in the region, the Free Syrian Army (FSA). According to reports, the FSA has made it clear that they “would not take part in U.S. plans for destroying the Islamic State until it got assurances on toppling Assad.”

Despite the accolades for the FSA emanating from Washington, past reports cite that their fighting ability has been greatly diminished, mainly due to defections to the more bloody militias. Britain’s The Guardian noted last year the FSA is “losing fighters and capabilities” to the often savage al-Nusra Front. FSA leaders at the time cited that “entire units have gone over to al-Nusra while others have lost a quarter or more of their strength to them recently.” The Guardian opined that al-Nusra also happens to be “emerging as the best-equipped, financed and motivated force” operating in Syria.

The FSA made a minor ripple in the Western media last year when one of its leaders was video recorded cutting the heart out of a dead Syrian government soldier, then eating it. According to translators, the FSA member reportedly stated “I swear to allah we will eat your hearts out” as he dined on the internal organ of the fallen soldier.
