Somewhat of a cross between the national temporary insanity better known as the Macarena craze of the mid-90s, and the status symbol worthiness of being the first kid on your block to get a confirmed kill, à la Full Metal Jacket, the rich and famous are all agog to be publicly dared to participate in the latest cultural phenomena – the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. As reported by the Associated Press via the Miami Herald on Aug. 28, 2014, the ALS Association has raked in nearly $100 million since the advent of the muy frío fundraiser.
The rare, but nonetheless deadly Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often called Lou Gehrig’s Disease, has seen celebrities jump on the Ice Bucket Challenge bandwagon ranging from former President George W. Bush to former Massachusetts First Lady Ann Romney to Hollywood D-Lister Tara Reid. Besides the standard bevy of beauties the likes of Kate Upton and Carrie Underwood having been seen on television and social media, the über-rich Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have also taken the plunge. However, the lion’s share of the $100-a-pledge challenges have come from everyday Americans believing they’re taking part in a lighthearted momentary shock for a more than deserving charity.
Yet according to the ALS Association’s 2014 annual report, a meager 27 percent of money spent actually went to finding a cure for the dreaded disease. Also, according to ALS Association’s 990 income tax exemption form (pages 8 and 9), those employees residing in the rarefied air of the upper corporate atmosphere won’t be putting in for an EBT Card anytime soon. Starting with the CEO on down to the Director of State Advocacy, annual incomes are well into six figures:
