Sparks fly, feelings hurt in Parliament ahead of British PM meeting American President

Go ahead. Watch the below video without breaking into “Hear, hear!” at least once. Go ahead, I dare you.

While the average Yank would undoubtedly feel the urge to add an errant “pip, pip, cheerio and all that rot” to their hearty shouts of “hear, hear” to the average Brit, this is old hat.

And while the average Yank is under the impression that every single Briton that’s ever drawn breath calls Oxford or Cambridge their alma mater and also flew for the RAF against those nasty Nazis, the average Brit fully realizes that their race isn’t really the pinnacle of self-control that Americans believe them to be.

Yes, our British cousins really do lose their tempers and raise their voices. But somehow, they manage to sound classy even when screaming at each other.

Case in point would be the rather raucous row at the recent episode of the rather addictive British House of Commons – Prime Minister’s Questions, seen here in the former colonies on C-SPAN.

Unheard of in American politics, the British PM must appear once a week to take questions, and quite a bit of heat, from other Members of Parliament.

With just days until her winging across The Pond as the first head of state to meet President Trump, Theresa May, British Prime Minister and Conservative (sort of) Party Leader (Maidenhead) went at it with her counterpart, Jeremy Corbyn, Labour (Communist) Party Leader (Islington North).

As cited by C-SPAN, Comrade Corbyn initiated the attack;

THE THREAT TO WORKERS RIGHTS, 6 MILLION EARNING LESS THAN A LIVING WAGE. MANY PEOPLE, CONTRACTS, NO PROTECTION OFFERED BY THE CONTRACT. WHAT THEY ARE DOING OFFERING BARGAIN BASEMENT ALTERNATIVE. TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TODAY TO CONGRATULATE THE 100,000 PEOPLE WHO MARCHED IN BRITAIN LAST WEEKEND TO HIGHLIGHT WOMEN’S RIGHTS AFTER PRESIDENT TRUMP’S INAUGURATION AND EXPRESS THEIR CONCERNS ABOUT HIS MISOGYNY. MANY HAVE CONCERNS, MISTER SPEAKER, IN THE FORTHCOMING MEETING WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP SHE WILL BE PREPARED TO OFFER UP THE SACRIFICE THE OPPORTUNITY OF AMERICAN COMPANIES TO TAKE OVER PARTS OF THE NHS AND PUBLIC SERVICES, WILL SHE ASSURE THE HOUSE IN ANY TRADE DEAL NONE OF THOSE THINGS OPENED UP AS A BARGAINING CHIP?

To wit, the PM shot back angrily;

THIS GOVERNMENT INTRODUCED THE NATIONAL LIVING WAGE. AND THE CONTRACTS ON THE ISSUE OF MY VISIT TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, I’M PLEASED TO MEET PRESIDENT TRUMP SO EARLY IN HIS ADMINISTRATION, THAT IS THE STRENGTH OF THE SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP ON WHICH HE AND I INTEND TO BUILD. CAN I ALSO SAY I AM NOT AFRAID TO SPEAK FRANKLY TO A PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. I AM ABLE TO DO THAT, WE HAVE THAT SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP THAT HE WOULD NEVER HAVE WITH THE UNITED STATES.
