Turkish teen singing sensation shot in the head, listed in critical condition

A 19-year-old Turkish teenager from a Islamic fundamentalist region of her country is listed in critical condition after an assassination attempt on her life. As reported by both NBC News and Great Britain’s BBC news service, both on May 19, 2015, singer and rising pop sensation Mutlu Kaya was found in her home shot in the head by an assailant armed with a 7.65 mm (.32 caliber) pistol.

With the American Department of State’s official website making note that 99 percent of Turks are adherents of Islam, the attractive silver-eyed brunette’s home of Diyarbakir province not only mirrors the nation’s religious persuasion, but is well known as a stronghold of strict obedience to the often sanguine meting out of Shari’a Law. Kaya’s reportedly intimated to friends that she’s recently been in fear for her life.

The national newspaper is also reporting that the same threats have come from within her family. Kaya was found in her home Monday gravely wounded with the police stating the shooter opened fire on the girl through a garden facing window.

Making headlines and a popular following in the west Asian nation, the teen singer has made a name for herself after appearing on Sesi Çok Güzel (Sounds Too Good), the Turkish version of America’s The Voice and the UK’s Britain’s Got Talent TV shows. With her thigh-length hair making her immediately recognizable, Kaya has further endeared herself to many of her fellow Turks when she was taken under the wing of Sibel Can, arguably Turkey’s greatest folk singer. Taking to social media, Can sent the message “My beautiful Mutlu how could they do this to you…” upon hearing of the attempt on her protégé’s life.
