On This Veterans Day, It’s Men Like PFC Fenton who Deserve the Honor

Of all the powerful images to come out of WWII, from the direct hit to the USS Arizona during the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, to the US Marines raising the Stars and Stripes on Mt. Suribachi in the midst of the Battle of Iwo Jima, I think the one above is one of the most powerful photos from the war.

Marines aboard a naval vessel after fighting in one of the many amphibious attacks.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that I didn’t say this picture is one of the more famous, but what I consider to be one of the more powerful.

With that aside, allow me to give some of the story behind the photograph.

Col. Francis Fenton, USMC, is seen praying over the flag-draped body of his son, 19-year-old PFC Michael “Mike” Fenton, USMC.

After Col. Fenton finished praying for his boy, he looked at all the other dead Marines and said, “Look at are these poor souls. None of them had their fathers here to pray for them.”

In my opinion, Memorial Day is the national holiday we should focus on. Specifically, it’s men like PFC Michael Fenton who deserve our remembrance.

Fighting on Tarawa.

Mike Fenton will never fall in love with the girl next-door. Will never be told “You may kiss your bride.” Will never rock his kids to sleep. Will never teach his grandsons how to play ball or have tea parties with his granddaughters.

Veterans Day has its importance, but remembering and giving true memorial to those vets who gave their last full measure is what I hope Americans will focus on now and in the future.
