It was 1945, the prefecture of Okinawa had just fallen to a combined American force of 500,000 Marines, sailors, soldiers and airmen. Ground troops went from initially 190,000 to 250,000 by the time Okinawa was finally declared secured.

The cost in blood was 12,500 dead Americans, 35,000 wounded. Of the roughly 90,000 Imperial Japanese troops, the Yanks killed almost every single one. Not so much due to Americans being bloodthirsty, but more so because the Japanese would literally fight to the death.

Interestingly enough, the vast majority of “Japanese troops” who surrendered on Okinawa were in reality, Korean slave laborers.
