As stunning as it seems, Italian news sources are citing that a 27-year-old Iraqi man raped, then strangled to death a 16-year-old Iraqi girl on a slowly sinking sailboat that was trying to sneak everyone aboard into Italy.
But wait, there’s more. The victim was killed right in front of her own mother.
According to at least one Italian news service, Agenzia Giornalistica Italia (Italian Journalism Agency), the yet to be publicly identified assailant committed the rape and murder was just his way to “vent his violence” after his wife and child drowned during the illegal crossing from Turkey to Italy.
Also cited, “The incident was reported by the girl’s mother, who managed to escape the shipwreck, as soon as she came ashore in Roccella Jonica.”
A second Italian news service, Corriere della Sera (The Evening Courier) reports that in the sinking of the sailboat, there was “30 confirmed dead, including 12 children and an unknown number of missing” as the vessel was adrift for five days.
