Haitian woman selling Bonbon tè (AKA: ‘Dirt Cookies‘).
When times are tough, all cultures throughout all history have relied on ersatz food of some rather curious recipes.
- Sawdust Bread has been a European favorite for centuries, especially during the latest World War (which they started).
- During the Great Depression, Americans (supposedly) enjoyed a lovely Vinegar Pie.
- English haute cuisine includes Blood Pudding (fried pig’s blood, pig’s fat, various grains).
- The Chinese still enjoy a hearty bowl of Placenta Stew (no… really).
Yet for whatever strange reason, even after billions upon billions of dollars allegedly sent to their nation, more than a few in Haiti have to resort to eating dirt (video below).
For those who just casually follow the news, even they know that this particular Caribbean nation has no functioning government, just various street gangs calling the shots, literally and figuratively.
Quite the interesting whistle-blowing report from The Canada-Haiti Information Project, asking some rather embarrassing questions involving the Clinton Foundation and the $13.3 billion pledged by international donors.
