Who says the Jackass Party of 1860 is fundamentally different from the Jackass Party of present day? Just me, but I’m calling bullshit on that.
Case in point: I’ve noticed that if we just substitute the words abortion for slavery, and vice-versa, the Jackass Party platform of 1860 differs very little from that of the Jackass Party Platform of 2020.
As noted from the presidential archives of the University of California at Santa Barbara, the Democrat Party platform of 1860, specifically, party planks 2 and 6. Keep in mind that slavery was Constitutionally legal as of 1860 (emphasis mine);
2. Inasmuch as difference of opinion exists in the Democratic party as to the nature and extent of the powers of a Territorial Legislature, and as to the powers and duties of Congress, under the Constitution of the United States, over the institution of slavery within the Territories.
6. Resolved, That the enactments of the State Legislatures to defeat the faithful execution of the Fugitive Slave Law, are hostile in character, subversive of the Constitution, and revolutionary in their effect.
Now let’s fast-forward 160-years. Taken from the official website of the Democrat Party platform as of 2020. Keep in mind that abortion was Constitutionally legal as of 2020 (emphasis mine);
Democrats are committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. We believe unequivocally, like the majority of Americans, that every woman should be able to access high-quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion.
Democrats oppose and will fight to overturn federal and state laws that create barriers to reproductive health and rights. We will repeal the Hyde Amendment, and protect and codify the right to reproductive freedom.
Seriously, just change out slavery for abortion or reproductive, those party planks convey the same message.
Understanding that party platform can be rather legalistic and devoid of emotions, how do Democrat leaders speak of slavery or abortion?
I’ll post a quote of Democrat honchoes of then and now, I’ll just X-out the words slavery and abortion/reproductive.
You have a 50/50 chance of getting right if the quote is from present day or pre-War Between the States;
‘It is the duty of society to protect the weak;’ but protection cannot be efficient without the power of control; therefore, ‘It is the duty of society to XXXX the weak.’
Now this;
“Radical Republicans are charging ahead with their crusade to criminalize XXXX in the Congress. Be aware of this: The Republicans are planning a nationwide XXXX ban.”
Give up?
The first quote was from Democrat, slave-owner, author and sociologist George Fitzhugh from his book Cannibals All!, or Slaves Without Masters from 1857.
The second quote is from Democrat Rep. Nancy Pelosi (CA) from her comments to the press on 24 June, 2022.
